Regulating the Emotions with Food

Last year I posted to my blog a bit of writing regarding regulating the female cycle with various essential fatty acids during specific times of the month. Here are some ideas to play with regarding emotions or the emotional cycle.

Sugar
- will bring you up, but bring you down as well
1) if you must eat sugar, do it before 3 PM so the body has enough time to process it well
2) eat sugar in conjunction with a root tea. What is a root tea? Good ones are burdock, dandelion, or yellow dock. Good places to order from are Frontier Co-op and Flower Power
3) if you must eat sugar, look for raw sugar, Sucanat, Rapadura, evaporated cane juice, honey, or best- brown rice syrup. I am not a fan of the highly processed, high fructose containing agave, though I have used it in the past. For more info check out John Kohler's article.

Greens- these nutrient powerhouses will have a positive effect on the emotional state. Here are some tips.
1) Spinach- eat mostly raw with an oil and a vinegar. When cooked, spinach is high in oxalic acid and binds to calcium. Debbie Took has a nice article on Oxalic Acid.
2) Kale and Collards - nutrient dense, better when steamed with sea salt, a bit of tomato and a splash of balsamic vinegar.
3) Lettuce- again, nice with oil and vinegar. The oil will break down the fat soluble vitamins (E, A, D, K) and the vinegar will break down the water soluble vitamins (B, C) and minerals to prepare them to be utilized well by your body.

Fermented Products- help us digest, to alleviate irritation that results from undigested food in the gut. Do a bit of experimenting to see what fermented product your body likes.
Pickles and saurkraut may work for one person whereas yogurt and sour cream may work for another.
